About the Speaker and the Talk

Manohar Devadoss was born in 1936 and spent his formative years in Madurai. He started drawing very early in his childhood. He recalls that his school notebooks were full of drawings. Most of them were drawn while the teachers were handling a different type of easel.  His teachers were indulgent and let his art and craft flourish. While studying in American College, Madurai he made a very detailed and intricate ink-drawing of the college chapel. He considers this as a watershed moment of his artistic career.

His marriage to Mahema, a gold medal-winning graduate in Fine Arts, in 1963 set in motion more than four decades of creative collaboration which did not weaken or wane despite Manohar battling falling eyesight and Mahema, crippling quadriplegia. He raced against time to draw and write, copiously. His drawings of many historic, social and cultural landmarks of Madurai and Madras are as evocative as the landmarks themselves invoking immediate association to these historic cities.

Manohar Devadoss has so far published seven books, six of them profusely illustrated. His books on Madurai have gone through several reprints. He is currently collaborating with Sujata Shankar to bring out ‘Madras Inked’

Manohar Devadoss will be moving us through a kaleidoscope of few landmarks and icons which he drew and portrayed during his career as an artist and writer, of the two cities he is intimately connected with, interspersing his talk with interesting, sometimes poignant stories from his life.        

 தலைப்பு – பேச்சாளர் பற்றி
 1936-ல் பிறந்த மனோகர் தேவதாஸ் மிக சிறு வயதிலேயே படங்கள் வரைவதில் ஆர்வம் காட்டினார். மதுரையில் படிக்கும் போது, பள்ளி மற்றும் கல்லூரி நோட்டு புத்தகங்களில் இவர் வரைந்த படங்களே அதிகமாக இருக்குமாம். அமெரிக்கன் காலேஜில் படிக்கும் போது கல்லூரி வளாகத்தில் இருக்கும் தேவாலயத்தை இவர் வரைந்த மிக நுணுக்கமான மற்றும் விரிவான இங்க் படம்தான் அவருடைய நீண்ட கலைப் பயணத்தின் தொடக்கம் என்கிறார்.  
தங்க பதக்கத்துடன் நுண்கலை பட்டம் பெற்ற மகிமாவை, 1963-ல் திருமணம் செய்து கொண்டார். இவர் மனோகர் தேவதாஸின் கலைப் பயணத்தின் வழிகாட்டி, துணைவி மற்றும் சீடராக அமைந்தார் எனலாம். திருமணமாகி சில வருடங்களிலியே இருவரும் பலஇடையூறுகளை சந்திக்க வேண்டியிருந்தது. மனோகர் தேவதாஸின் கண் பார்வை மங்க ஆரம்பித்து. பார்வை முற்றிலும் போவதற்க்கு முன் என்ன வரைய வேண்டுமோ அதை செய்யுமாறு மருத்துவர்கள் பணித்தார்கள். இதை தொடர்ந்து மகிமா ஒரு விபத்தில் அடிபட்டு கை,கால்கள் அனைத்தின் செயலிழந்தார். இந்த சோதனைகளையும் மீறி இருவரும் ஓருவருக்கொருவர் உதவியுடன் வாழ்க்கையின் சவால்களை எதிர் கொள்ள ஆரம்பித்தனர். மனோகர் நிறைய வரைய, எழுத ஆரம்பித்தார். மதுரை மற்றும் சென்னையின் முக்கிய வரலாற்று கலாச்சார சமுதாய சின்னங்களை பிரதிபலித்த கோட்டு ஓவியங்கள் மிக பிரபலமாகின.  பேரும் புகழும் ஈட்டு தந்தன.   

மனோகர் தேவதாஸ் இது வரை ஏழு புத்தகங்கள் வெளியிட்டுள்ளார். அதில் ஆறு படங்கள் கொண்டுள்ளவை. மதுரையை மையமாக்கி இவர் எழுதிய இரண்டு புத்தகங்களின் மறு பதிப்புகள் பல வந்துள்ளன. சுஜாதா சங்கருடன் இணைந்து உருவாக்கும் ‘மதராஸ் இங்க்ட்’ எனும் புத்தகம் விரைவில் வெளி வர இருக்கிறது. 

மனோகர் தேவதாஸ் வரைந்த மதுரை மற்றும் மதராஸின் முக்கியமான சின்னங்களை பற்றியும் அவை வரையப்பட்ட பின்ணனி பற்றியும் சுவையான சொந்த கதைகளையும் நகைச்சுவை கலந்து பேச இருக்கிறார்.

தலைப்பு பற்றி
கரிகாலன் காவிரிக்குக் கரை எடுத்தான், அசோகன் குளங்கள் வெட்டினான் என்று வரலாற்றைப் படிக்கிறோம். ஆனால் பல்வேறு மன்னர்களும், ஆயிரமாயிரம் ஆண்டு காலமாக, அணை கட்டியும், ஏரி அமைத்தும், கால்வாய், குளம், கிணறு, படிக்கிணறு என்று பல்லாயிர தொண்டுகள் செய்து வந்துள்ளனர். சோழ பாண்டிய பல்லவ காலத்துக் கோயில்கள் மட்டுமல்ல, வீராணம், மதுராந்தகம், திருபுவனை, சீவலப்பேரி போன்ற புகழ்பெற்ற தமிழக ஏரிகள், மன்னர்கள் பெயர்களை இன்றும் புகழுடன் தாங்கித் திகழ்வன. தர்ம சாத்திரங்களும் சங்க இலக்கியமும் இதை மன்னனின் கடமையாக விதிக்கின்றன. “நீரின்றி அமையாது யாக்கை” என்பது ஒரு புறநானூற்றுப் பாடலின் வரி.

கோயில்களில், ஏரிக்கரைகளிலும், மதகுகளிலும், குளங்களிலும் கல்வெட்டுகளும் செப்பேடுகளில் சாசனங்களாகவும் மெய்கீர்த்தியிலும் இவை குறிக்கப் பெற்றுள்ளன. பல்வேறு ஊர்களிலும் நீர் வாரியங்கள் அமைக்கப்பட்டன. அவற்றைப் பராமரிக்கும் பொறுப்பு, அதற்கான நிர்வாக விதிகள், நிதி அறிக்கைகள், கடமை தவறினால் அவற்றுக்கான நீதிமுறைகள் ஆகியவற்றைச் சொல்லும் கல்வெட்டுகள் உள்ளன. ஒரு சில கல்வெட்டுகள், பல நூறு வருடங்களுக்கு முன்னர் செய்யப்பட்ட பணிகளைக் குறிப்பிட்டு, அன்று ஆண்ட மன்னரின் பணியையும் குறிப்பிட்டு, அக்காலத்து வரலாற்று தகவல்களையும் சேர்த்துத் தெரிவிக்கின்றன.

தமிழ், சம்ஸ்கிருதம், பிராகிருதம், தெலுங்கு, கன்னடம், என்று பல்வேறு மொழிகளிலும் பாரதம் முழுவதும் இதுபோன்ற கல்வெட்டுகள் உள்ளன. ஜூலை மாத நிகழ்வில இவற்றை நமக்கு விளக்குவார் முனைவர் நாகசாமி.
பேச்சாளர் பற்றி
தமிழ்நாடு தொல்லியல் துறையின் இயக்குனராகவும் காஞ்சி ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி பல்கலைகழகத்தின் துணைவேந்தராகவும் பணியாற்றிய முனைவர் ரா நாகசாமி, இந்தியாவின் தலைசிறந்த அறிஞர்களில் ஒருவர். கலை, தொல்லியல், பண்டைக்காலக் கட்டிடக் கலை, இலக்கியம், கல்வெட்டியல், எழுத்துமுறை, நாணவியல், கோவில் நடைமுறைகள், இசை, நடனம் என பல துறைகளின் பன்முக ஆளுமை. இவர் தலைமையில் தமிழகத்தில் கரூர், ஆலங்குளம், கொற்கை, கங்கைகொண்ட சோழபுரம் போன்ற இடங்களில் மிக முக்கியமான அகழ்வாராய்ச்சிகள் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டன. பல புத்தகங்களின் ஆசிரியரான திரு நாகசாமி, தென்னக செப்புப் படிம வல்லுநராக உலகமெங்கும் கருதப்படுகிறார். சர்வதேசக் கருத்தரங்குகளில் இவர் அளித்த ஆராய்ச்சிக் கட்டுரைகள் பல புதிய அணுகுமுறைகளை ஏற்படுத்திக் கொடுத்தன. சிதம்பரத்தில் முப்பத்தெட்டு வருடங்களாக நடந்துகொண்டிருக்கும் நாட்யாஞ்சலி விழாவைத் தொடங்கிவைத்த பெருமை இவருக்கு உண்டு.

Water Management Inscriptions in India

About the Topic
The history books that we read as children were replete with references to the management of water resource by Kings and Emperors.  King Karikalan building a dam on Cauvery, Raja Bhoja excavating perhaps the largest man-made lake in India, Emperor Ashoka causing creation of many water bodies, etc.,  It is not just the popular ones but several hundreds of rulers, chieftains and administrators across India have built wells, step-wells, tanks, lakes, canals and dams during the historical period of India. Dharmasastra and our ancient literary works exhort and dictate that it is one of the primary duties of a ruler to create and maintain water bodies.  
In Tamil Nadu, not only the temples but also many water bodies wear proudly, even today, the names of famous kings.  Veeranam, Madurantakam, Thirubhuvanai, Seevalapperi, to name a few.
Copper plates and inscriptions found in temples, temple ponds, bunds of lakes, sluices contain a wealth of information about our ancestor’s approach to water management. They tell us about the existence of local bodies in many places for water management and how they were administered, how much land and revenue were allocated for maintenance, punishment to both the administrators and others for failing in their responsibilities. Some inscriptions contain even reference to endowments made and work done, several hundreds of years in the past.      
Dr. R Nagaswamy will speak about these extraordinary records of foresight and vision, found in the length and breadth of India, in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Prakrit, Sanskrit, et al., for Tamil Heritage Trust on 6th July.
“நீரின்றி அமையாது யாக்கை”  ( Neerindri Amaiyadhu Yakkai - roughly translated as ‘Without Water – A life cannot be sustained) is a phrase from a Tamil poem  'Puranaanuru' 
About the speaker
Dr. R. Nagaswamy, Director of Archaeology (Retired) and former Vice-chancellor, Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Viswa Mahavidyalaya University (SCSVMV), is one among the most distinguished scholars covering a vast field of specialization, art, archaeology, architecture, literature, epigraphy, palaeography, numismatics, temple rituals and philosophy, ancient law and society, music, dance and South Asian art. Many important excavations at Karur, Alagankulam, Korkai, and Gangaikonda-Cholapuram, were conducted by him. He is an acknowledged international expert on South Indian Bronzes, author of several books and path-breaking papers at international conferences. He also founded the now world-famous Chidambaram Natyanjali Festival.
