About
the Topic: In a land with no perennial rivers, it is the system Eris
and canals that have been the backbone of Tamil culture since the most
ancient of times. In short, they have transformed the landscape to make
agriculture possible. They were built by both kings and commoners, and
engineered with precision. In these times of unpredictable floods and
droughts, groundwater depletion and land use changes, the significance
of these structures is magnified. We will try to examine their history
and their technology, and explore their relevance for today.
