The Harappan Civilization flourished in the Greater Indus Region (Indus-Sarasvati-Gujarat-Makran) from c. 2600-1900 BCE. It is characterised by its urban character achieved through a long-drawn cultural development in the region.
The domestication of plants and animals settled human life. This, in turn, contributed to the production of surplus food, leading to multiple results, including a social hierarchy, differential access to raw materials and finished products, craft activities, and long-distance trade.
In his Talk, "Harappan Civilization: Emergng Perspectives", Dr V N Prabhakar of IIT Gandhianagar, shows us how field research conducted in the last several decades has enabled a better understanding of Harappan culture, its terminology, chronology, technology, and trade relations.
About the Speaker:
Dr V N Prabhakar is Associate Professor (Archaeology) at the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar, since September 2020. He specializes in the Protohistoric Archaeology of India, Field Archaeology, Heritage Management and the Application of Sciences in Archaeology. He is the Archaeological Sciences Centre Coordinator at IIT Gandhinagar, fostering the application of sciences in archaeology.
