About the Topic: In a land with no perennial rivers, it is the system Eris and canals that have been the backbone of Tamil culture since the most ancient of times. In short, they have transformed the landscape to make agriculture possible. They were built by both kings and commoners, and engineered with precision. In these times of unpredictable floods and droughts, groundwater depletion and land use changes, the significance of these structures is magnified. We will try to examine their history and their technology, and explore their relevance for today.

About the speaker: Shashwath is an electronics engineer by profession, but an environmentalist and heritage enthusiast by interest. He has been involved in environmental and water issues in Chennai city since childhood, and has most recently been a part of the Cooum Cultural Mapping project. As a heritage enthusiast, he has contributed to Poetry in Stone, and has documented several heritage sites both in Tamil Nadu and outside.

About the Topic:  Sakitya Akademi award winning writer Ashokamitran (J. Thyagarajan) died last week on 23rd March 2017. A prolific writer, wrote over 200 short stories, 8 novels, 15 novellas and innumerable articles in Tamil. He also rewrote a few of his short stories to English and wrote a sketch of places in Chennai and about SS Vasan of Gemini Studios in English. Ashokamitran's contribution to Tamil literature includes his work as the editor of the magazine Kanaiyazhi, which provided space to most of the top Tamil writers of today. Many of his short stories and novels have been translated to English and other Indian languages. The talk will focus on Ashokamitran's life and will also take a critical look at his contribution to Tamil literature.

About the speaker: Gnani is a journalist and a writer, who has had a long association with Ashokamitran. They have worked together as part of the Theatre group Pareeksha.

தலைப்பு பற்றி: சாகித்ய அகாதெமி பரிசு பெற்ற எழுத்தாளர் அசோகமித்திரன் (ஜ.தியாகராஜன்) சென்ற வாரம் 23 மார்ச் 2017 அன்று காலமானார். தமிழில் 200க்கும் மேற்பட்ட சிறுகதைகளையும் 8 நாவல்களையும் 15 குறுநாவல்களையும்,  ஏராளமான கட்டுரைகளையும் எழுதியுள்ளார். தன்னுடைய சில சிறுகதைகளை ஆங்கிலத்தில் அவரே மறு ஆக்கம் செய்துள்ளார். சென்னையைப் பற்றிச் சில கட்டுரைகளையும் ஜெமினி ஸ்டூடியோஸின் எஸ்.எஸ்.வாசன் பற்றிய ஓர் ஆக்கத்தையும் ஆங்கிலத்தில் எழுதியுள்ளார். தமிழ் இலக்கியத்துக்கு அவர் ஆற்றிய முக்கிய பங்களிப்புகளில் ஒன்று கணையாழி இதழின் ஆசிரியராக இருந்தது, இன்று தமிழ் இலக்கியத்துக்கு முக்கியப் பங்களித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும் பல்வேறு எழுத்தாளர்களுக்கு களம் அமைத்துக் கொடுத்தார். அவருடைய பல சிறுகதைகளும் நாவல்களும் ஆங்கிலத்திலும் பிற இந்திய மொழிகளிலும் மொழியாக்கம் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளன.

பேச்சாளர் பற்றி: பத்திரிகையாளரும் எழுத்தாளருமான ஞாநி, அசோகமித்திரனுடன் நீண்ட காலத் தொடர்பில் இருந்தவர். பரீக்ஷா என்ற நாடகக் குழுவில் இருவரும் இணைந்து பணியாற்றியுள்ளனர்.
