தலைப்பு – பேச்சாளர் பற்றி

திருக்கோயில் கட்டுமானம் குறித்து ஏராளமான சிற்ப சாஸ்திர ஆகம நூல்கள் தமிழில் கிடைக்கின்றன. அவற்றைப் பின்பற்றி ஆயிரம் ஆண்டுகளுக்கும் மேலாக, மரபு வழியில் ஏராளமான கோயில்கள் தொடர்ந்து கட்டப்பட்டு வருகின்றன. ’ஜீர்ணோத்தாரணம்’ என்னும் புனரமைப்புப் பணிகளும் மரபு வழியில் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டு வருகின்றன. காலத்திற்கேற்ப சிமெண்ட், இரும்புக் கம்பி, நவீன எந்திரங்கள் போன்றவற்றை பயன்படுத்துவது அதிகமாகி வருகிறது. கோயில்களின் தொன்மையையும் அவற்றின் பாரம்பரியத்தையும் பாதிக்காத வண்ணம் நவீன தொழில்நுட்பக் கருவிகளை தவிர்த்து மரபு வழியில் புனரமைப்புப் பணிகளை மேற்கொள்ளவேண்டும் என்பது தொல்லியல் ஆர்வலர்களின் கோரிக்கையாக இருந்து வருகிறது.

2011-ல் மதுரை மீனாட்சியம்மன் கோயில் பொற்றாமரைக் குளத்தின் தெற்குப் பகுதி, அதன் பாரம்பரியப் பெருமை மாறாமல் மரபு வழியில் புனரமைப்பு செய்யப்பட்டது. பன்னிரெண்டாம் நூற்றாண்டைச் சேர்ந்த திருவெள்ளறை கோயில் கோபுரத்தை மரபு வழியில் புதுப்பிக்கும் பணி குமரகுருபரன் ஸ்தபதியின் தலைமையில் நடைபெற்று வருகிறது. சென்னை ஐஐடி கல்லூரியின் கட்டிடக்கலை மாணவர்கள் இவற்றை ஆவணப்படுத்தியிருக்கிறார்கள். மேற்கத்திய தொழில்நுட்ப முறையை விடுவித்து பண்டைய இந்திய கட்டிடக்கலையை அடியொற்றி புனரமைப்பு பணிகள் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டு வருகின்றன.

குமரகுருபரன் ஸ்தபதி, திராவிட கட்டிடக்கலையை மாணவர்களுக்கு அறிமுகப்படுத்தும் பணியைத் தொடர்ந்து செய்துவருகிறார். ஐஐடி பொறியியல் மாணவர்கள் தொடங்கி ஏராளமான தன்னார்வலர்களும் அவரிடம் கற்றுவருகிறார்கள். திருவெள்ளறை கோபுரப் புனரமைப்புப் பணிகளை விளக்கி, தொடக்கம் முதல் இறுதிவரை எடுக்கப்பட்ட பிரத்யேகப் படங்களின் வாயிலாக ஒரு உரையை நிகழ்த்த இருக்கிறார். தமிழ்ப் பாரம்பரிய அறக்கட்டளையின் சார்பில் நிகழ்வு நடைபெற இருக்கிறது.

About the Topic & Speaker

There are many ancient Shilpa Sastra and Agamic texts in Tamil which deal with several aspects in the construction of a temple.  Thousands of temples have been built in the last many centuries following these canons.  However very few know that, the methodology of “Jeernoddharana” i.e., repairs, renovation, restoration and reconstruction of temples is also discussed elaborately in these texts. In times when the use of modern construction materials such as cement, steel, etc., is so pervasive, there are many voices, loud and muted, demanding traditional wisdom be relied upon in the context of preserving the antique beauty of the temples.    
   
A third-generation Sthapathi hailing from Thiruvathigai, a small town in Cuddalore District, Kumaragurbaran Sthapathi holds Post Graduate Diploma in Temple Art from Alagappa University, Karaikudi.  Government of Tamil Nadu approved him as ‘Sthapathi’ in 2009. Since then he has executed ‘Thiruppani’ in 80 temples, both public and private.  He has also been conducting classes on Dravidian Temple Architecture under the aegis of IIT, Madras.   

Under his guidance, the south corridor, near Potramarai Kulam, of the majestic Meenakshi Amman Temple was restored to its classical elegance following traditional methods and materials in 2011.  Taking a cue from that experience, Kumaragurbaran Sthapathi and his team have carried out restoration work in the partly-built Gopuram of 12th-century Thiruvellarai Sri Pundarikaksha Perumal Temple. The whole process, with its details, has been documented by IIT, Madras. 

He will be speaking on the restoration and reconstruction work, right from planning to execution, carried out under his guidance at the Thiruvellarai temple with the help of photographs and other aids.

பேச்சாளர் பற்றி

முனைவர் மார்க்சிய காந்தி அவர்கள் தமிழக தொல்லியல் துறையின் கல்வெட்டியல் பயின்ற முதல் பெண் என்ற பெருமைக்குரியவர். திருவதிகை வீரட்டானம் திருக்கோயில், ஸ்ரீமூஷ்ணம் பூவராகர் திருக்கோயில், அதியர் மரபு ஆகிய நூல்களை இயற்றியுள்ளார். சிவராமமூர்த்தி எழுதிய “இந்திய கல்வெட்டுகளும் தென்னிந்திய எழுத்துகளும்” என்ற நூலை ஆங்கிலத்திலிருந்து தமிழாக்கியுள்ளார். “தமிழ் கல்வெட்டுகள் வழி தமிழக மகளிர்” என்ற தலைப்பில் நவம்பர் 2012லும், “கல்வெட்டியல் துறையில் நாகசாமியின்  பங்களிப்பு” என்ற தலைப்பில் டிசம்பர்  2014லும், தமிழ்ப் பாரம்பரிய அறக்கட்டளைக்காக உரையாற்றினார்.

About the Topic

The talk will attempt to weave together evidence from the Sangam literature, archaeological discoveries, and inscriptions, to deepen our understanding of trade and commerce in ‘Tamilakam’ during the historic period.

About the Speaker
Dr. N. Marxia Gandhi, Deputy Superintending Archaeologist (Retd) of Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology has the distinction of being the first ever woman Epigraphist from Tamil Nadu. She is the author of ‘Thiruvathikai Veerattanam’ (Monograph on a  Siva Temple), ‘Sri Mushnam Boovaraha Permal Temple’ (Monograph on a Vishnu Temple), and ‘Athiyar Marabu -- From Sangam Age to 13th c.AD’ (Lineage of Athiyar, a Tamil Chieftain). Her book “Select Inscriptions of Tamil Nadu” is considered to be an excellent guide for beginners in the study of Epigraphy.  She has translated Dr. C. Sivaramurthy's "Indian Epigraphy and South Indian Scripts" in Tamil titled "இந்திய கல்வெட்டுகளும் தென்னிந்திய எழுத்துக்களும்."
Her previous talks at Tamil Heritage Trust, include a monthly talk in November 2012 on “தமிழ் கல்வெட்டுகள் வழி தமிழக மகளிர்” ‘(Women in Tamil Inscriptions) and in Pechhu Kachcheri of December 2014 on “கல்வெட்டியல் துறையில் நாகசாமியின் பங்களிப்பு” (Contribution of Dr, Nagaswamy to Epigraphy).
