About the Topic:
The ethnic connection between the Tamils in India and the Tamils in Sri Lanka is long and continuous. However, interactions between them in the fields of art, music and literature have been documented only in the recent past. Starting from 19th century, a steady flow of Carnatic musicians played key roles as cultural ambassadors between these two countries, enriching and extending the frontiers of music. It is in this context the genius of Tavil maestro Yazhpanam Thedchanamoorthy has to be understood. Thedchanamoorthy`s ancestors migrated from Tamil Nadu. As a young lad, he came to Tanjore to learn Carnatic Music under the guidance of many musicians and as an adult, he came back to inspire generations of Carnatic musicians in Tamil Nadu. He lived only for 42 years and died in 1975.
Film Maker Amshan Kumar will give an outline of the musical heritage of Sri Lanka and present his national award winning Tamil documentary, 'Yazhpanam Thedchanamoorthy - Music Beyond Boundaries' that chronicles the art and times of Thedchanamoorthy and the close ties of the musicians of the two countries.

இந்தியத் தமிழர்களுக்கும் ஈழத் தமிழர்களுக்கும் இடையேயான பந்தம், நீண்ட நெடியதும், தொடர்ச்சியானதும்கூட. ஆனாலும், கலை, இலக்கியம், இசை போன்ற துறைகளில் நிகழ்ந்த கலாசாரப் பரிவர்த்தனைகள் கடந்த சில நூற்றாண்டுகளாகத்தான் பதிவு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளன. பத்தொன்பதாம் நூற்றாண்டு தொடங்கி, ஏராளமான இசைக்கலைஞர்கள், கலாசாரத் தூதுவர்களாக இருந்திருக்கிறார்கள். தவில் இசைக்கலைஞர் யாழ்ப்பாணம் தெட்சணாமூர்த்தி அவர்களில் குறிப்பிடத்தக்கவர். அவரது முன்னோர்கள் தமிழகத்திலிருந்து இலங்கைக்கு இடம்பெயர்ந்தவர்கள். கர்நாடக இசையில் தேர்ச்சி பெறுவதற்காக சிறு வயதில் தஞ்சாவூர் வந்த தெட்சணாமூர்த்தி, பின்னாளில் புகழ் பெற்ற தவில் கலைஞராக தமிழ்நாட்டிற்கு வருகை தந்து, தனது இசை மூலம் அடுத்த தலைமுறைகளுக்கு ஆதர்சமாக விளங்கினார். 42 வயது வரை மட்டுமே வாழ்ந்த தெட்சணாமூர்த்தி, 1975ல் மறைந்தார்.
திரைப்பட இயக்குநர் அம்ஷன் குமார், இலங்கையின் இசைப் பாராம்பரியம் குறித்த அறிமுகத்துடன், தன்னுடைய இயக்கத்தில் வெளிவந்த, 'யாழ்ப்பாணம் தெட்சணாமூர்த்தி - எல்லைகளைக் கடந்த இசை' என்னும் தேசிய விருது பெற்ற ஆவணப்படத்தைத் திரையிட்டுப் பேசவிருக்கிறார்.
About the Speaker:
Amshan Kumar is a National Award winning Film Maker and writer. His first Tamil feature film ‘Oruthi’ was based on a story by the celebrated Tamil writer Ki. Rajanarayanan and it won several awards. His second feature film 'Manusangada' has been screened in several International Film Festivals. He is also a prolific documentary film-maker. Some of his documentaries include biographies of eminent people like the Nobel laureate C.V.Raman, Poet Subrahmania Bharati, writer Ashokamitran and Carnatic singer Manakkal Rangarajan. His book ‘Cinema Rasanai’ is well appreciated and has been prescribed as a text in several universities in India and Sri Lanka.

அம்ஷன் குமார், நன்கு அறியப்பட்ட திரைப்பட இயக்குநர். கி.ராஜநாராயணனின் கதையைத் தழுவி இவர் இயக்கிய ‘ஒருத்தி’ திரைப்படம் ஏராளமான விருதுகளை பெற்றுத்தந்தது. இரண்டாவது படமான ‘மனுஷங்கடா’, பல உலகத் திரைப்பட விழாக்களில் திரையிடப்பட்டுள்ளது. நோபல் பரிசுபெற்ற விஞ்ஞானி சி.வி. ராமன், மகாகவி சுப்ரமணிய பாரதியார், எழுத்தாளர் அசோகமித்திரன், கர்நாடக இசைப்பாடகர் மணக்கால் ரங்கராஜன் ஆகியோர் குறித்து ஆவணப்படங்களை இயக்கியிருக்கிறார். ‘சினிமா ரசனை’ என்னும் இவரது புத்தகம் பரவலான வரவேற்பைப் பெற்று, இந்திய, இலங்கைப் பல்கலைக்கழகங்களில் பாடமாக வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
