About the Topic

The Pudukkottai region in Tamil Nadu has a great Jaina tradition.  Sittannavasal near Pudukkottai has some of the earliest frescoes in South India.

The paintings of Sittannavasal, dating to the ninth century in the Pandya kingdom, are of classicism and historical significance comparable to the Buddhist art of Ajanta and Hindu art in Thanjavur Brihadeesvaram.

The paintings of Sittannavasal are barely visible now thanks to the ravage of time, nature and vandalism. At this rate of decay, these priceless treasures which withstood for many centuries, will be completely lost forever in the next few decades.

The talk will introduce Sittannavasal and its various historical monuments, ranging over several centuries, including prehistory. A proposal by Prof Swaminathan to create an educational center, and to suggestions for conservation of these art treasures will follow.
About the speaker
Rangarathnam Gopu, having been born and brought up in Chennai, obtained his BE in Computer Engineering from Arulmigu Kalasalingam College of Engineering (now a deemed university) in Srivilliputhur and an MS in Computer Science from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, USA. He then worked in the US, as a software engineer, mostly at Microsoft in Seattle; but also brief stints at MicroAge in Arizona and Decide.Com in California.
Bored with software, he returned to India to pursue a career in writing and screenwriting. But his interest turned to other directions, like Art, History, Music, Heritage, Astronomy, Evolution, Genetics, Economics, etc., He reads, lectures writes and blogs on these subjects regularly.
He has been part of Tamil Heritage Trust for close to a decade and his contributions to organising Monthly Talks, Pechchu Kachcheri, Site Seminar, Mallai Study Tours are immense and invaluable. He has been part of Adyar and Cooum Cultural Mapping groups too.
He received Vedavalli Memorial Heritage Award for Services to Culture in 2016, instituted by Ramu Endowments associated with TAG group.
He is part of the group that founded the VarahaMihira Science Forum which has been conducting monthly lectures on science and scientists since August 2017. He delivered the forum’s first lecture, on French chemist Antoine Lavoisier and the Origin of Modern Chemistry.

 தலைப்பு பற்றி

தமிழ்க்கலை வரலாற்றிலும் பாண்டியர் கால வரலாற்றிலும் முக்கிய இடம் பெற்று விளங்குகிறது சித்தன்னவாசல். புதுக்கோட்டை மாவட்டத்தில், இலுப்பூர் வட்டத்தில் 15 கி.மீ தொலைவில் உயர்ந்த மலையின் இடையே இவ்வரலாற்றுச் சின்னம் அமைந்த்துள்ளது. இம்மலைக்கு செல்வதற்கு முன்னர், சாலைக்கு அருகில் 3000 ஆண்டுப் பழைமைச் சிறப்புமிக்க பெருங்கற்கால ஈமச் சின்னங்கள் காணப்படுகின்றன. இவை சித்தன்னவாசல் பகுதியின் தொன்மைச்சிறப்புக்குச் சிறந்த எடுத்துக்காட்டாகத் திகழ்கின்றன.

மலையின் அடிவாரத்தில் குடைவரைக்கோயில் காணப்படுகிறது. இக்குடைவரைக்கோயிலில் எழிலார்ந்த ஓவியங்கள் காணப்படுகின்றன. இங்கு காணும் கல்வெட்டினால் இது பாண்டியர் காலம் என அறியப்படுகிறது.

சித்தன்னவாசல் ஓவியங்கள் 1200 ஆண்டுகள் ஆனதாலும் பொதுமக்கள் இதனை பாதுகாக்க போதிய ஆர்வம் காட்டததாலும் பல பகுதிகள் அழிந்து கொண்டுவருகின்றன. வரலாற்றுப் புகழ் பெற்ற சித்தன்னவாசல் இடத்தினை மேம்படுத்த பேராசிரியர் சுவாமிநாதன் பல திட்டங்களை அளித்துள்ளார். 
           
பேச்சாளர் கோபு சித்தன்னவாசலின் சரித்திரம், கலை பிண்ணனி மட்டுமல்லாது அதை மேம்படுத்த பேராசிரியர் சுவாமிநாதன் தயாரித்த ‘சித்தன்னவாசல் திட்ட’த்தை (Project Sittannavasal) பற்றியும் பேச இருக்கிறார்.
